1st Floor Tenant improvement: TBD
- To meet the rigorous technical requirements to manufacture satellites in Planet Labs 1st Floor laboratory spaces, the design required cleanroom features, electrostatic resistant floors durable enough for heavy wear and tear, specific light levels to accomplish detailed tasks, and several layers of security per federal regulations.
- Planet already was home to the most prolific satellite production facility in the world – enabling them to launch a record 146 satellites in 2017. The new facility takes Planet to a new level. At 27,000+ square-feet, the state-of-the-art complex is six times the size of their previous lab and brings all aspects of spacecraft design and production – from R&D to manufacturing to testing – under one roof. This enables Planet Labs to iterate faster and continue to push the envelope of what small satellites are capable of. The additional square footage and flexible floor plan also allows for simultaneous production of multiple spacecraft lines, from Doves to future satellite constellations. For example, concurrent with other spacecraft designs, Planet can now build upwards of 40 Doves per week, which is nearly twice the build capacity of our previous manufacturing site. A highlight of the new facility is a multi-purpose environmental testing facility capable of simulating space environments and testing the readiness of our hardware for flight. Coupled with Planet’s expertise in automation and data aggregation, these physical testing capabilities allow us to qualify and release new designs and missions quickly – without compromising quality or agility.
Quezada Architecture was engaged by Planet Labs to provide design services for their new offices in San Francisco. Planet Labs is an American private earth imaging company based in San Francisco. The company designs and manufactures miniature satellites called Doves that are then delivered into orbit as passengers on other rocket launch missions. Each Dove earth observation satellite continuously scans earth, sending data once it passes over a ground station.
Located in a historic building in the South of Market neighborhood, the first floor encompasses 25,000 square feet of laboratory and satelite manufacturing space. A key feature of this floor is the 50-person laboratory with 3, 10k Class Cleanrooms and optics lab, research and development lab, and Dove production assembly space and inventory room along with 4 conference rooms, 35 work stations and support areas. Planet's 37,139 square foot office on the fourth floor will be home to a team of scientists, engineers, and operations specialists. Design of the space incorporates the theme "looking in" which transposes the colors, textures, and pattern observed by Planet's satellites in space into the look and feel of the tenant.
