The Highly Unlikely Yet Totally Predictable Return of Uggs

"...And last month a new flagship store concept, which leans heavily into sensual curves and terrazzo floors, was unveiled on Fifth Avenue. So, like it or not, Uggs are cool again. Or maybe they were always cool. Or, keeping in mind the strange and fickle ways that trends ebb and flow in the social media era, maybe they were never cool, which is what makes them, well, cool."

First Look: Ugg opens New York flagship; more to come

The new store is Ugg’s largest to date in the U.S., where it operates some 55 locations. The design speaks to the Ugg aesthetic of being cozy and comfortable and reflects the brand’s California’s heritage and evolution, from its signature boot to full lifestyle brand. The flagship was designed by Los Angeles-based architecture studio Florencia Pita & Co., in partnership with Quezada Architecture in San Francisco. Ugg’s DNA is evident throughout the space. Panels behind the cashwrap and throughout the store, for example, are styled to resemble the outsole of the Ugg boot.

Quezada Architecture and Florencia Pita & Co Design UGG's New NYC Flagship

Cecilia Quezada

“The flagship is driven by the concept of ‘lifestyle’, which is not only about the products or merchandise, but rather about an ideal of a more free and open space for an open society. The space is fluid, there are no designated men’s or women's areas, they can all be either/or, and the layout can be constantly changed and re-adapted. The custom-made freestanding fixtures, which allow for a more intimate shopping experience, are designed to be movable and flexible, and embrace multiple ‘lifestyles’ and narratives,” says Florencia Pita, principal of Florencia Pita & Co.
